Many young adult novels appear to have the attributes of autism (e.g., lack of eye contact, sensitivity to sound and touch, echolalia, strong preference for routine, inability to read social cues) presented in one or more characters; however, the word “autism” is never used. This could be for one of four reasons:

Historical fiction set prior to 1943 when autism was given a label

Books published prior to 1943

Authors who intentionally left out the label

Authors who were unaware of the label
